I deleted my preferences and this problem was fixed. Kind of an annoying
way to fix it, but relatively painless. I disabled all my extensions
first, one by one, to see if this was the cause, too. No joy.

I still experience this problem. It happens in firefox with a myriad of
addons installed, but not in a fresh version. I google an address and
then it shows the map just fine, but if I try to drag it around or zoom
in/out, the map turns into a square of gray.

Using Ubuntu 9.04 Google street view is all blacked out, the rest of Google map
is fine, satellite,etc.
Also noted,most video sites will not play , with the exception of youtube.

I had the same problem, both in Firefox 2 and 3:
Google Maps showed only the first map. After zooming the map disappears
and all is gray. Not even street view works.
I found out that the file prefs.js was causing the problem for some
reason. Just renaming it solved the problem, but of course you
