Try to update your system (apt-get update) and then again to install MySQL.
If that doesn't work from the MySQL install (apt-get remove mysql) and try
to install it. When you have have any problems please mail me.

I've had problems with mysql db from the beginning.. I guess I'll leave it
unconfigured and at the next instalation I'll install ubuntu for servers and no
more the desktop edition.
Hope is more stable.
