First of all I own a Logitech LX710 desktop kit, one single USB receiver
for both keyboard and mouse. You can have a look at the keyboard here

@Marco, would you mind sharing what you did with udev to get it working?

Got my keys working thanks to udev, I was remapping to keycodes with no
keysym associated (and avoiding xmodmap as well). WOW, after lots of
waisted hours and after 3 years since I bought this keyboard, I can
finally use all my multimedia/extra keys! Amazing! Thanks X11!

The shotgun solution for this, that does not require to rewrite X
protocols, are to:
1) simply remap based on model.
Who cares if microsoft wants my keyboard 4000 zoom keys to be scancode 89354^2?
just map it to 139 or any other scan code available (the keyboard does not have
more than 255
On my laptop, the keys that are handled by the hp_wmi give no scancodes
at all -- they're hardcoded to specific, too-high keycodes such as
KEY_INFO! You have to edit the module source to change them.
Some of the other keys' mappings are handled by udev, though. If the

Roman, your workaround works for me. But only with up/down arrow keys. I

I made a quick fix for this problem. It's based on kbd's showkey that
DOES show scancodes. It looks into configuration table and stuffs
required keysyms into X via Xtst package. Ugly, buggy and setuid (to
read console under X you have to be setuid), but it works (at least for
me) and requires only

I note that evdev-1.1.2 had a 'workaround', so at least some of the keys
on these keyboards would work -- it would blindly remap the keycodes:
X keycode = ((kernel keycode + 8) mod 256)
It's nasty, but at least it allows users with strange devices (like my
Logitech UltraX) to work...

In the upstream bug report it indicates that this issue would be
resolved by revving the x11 protocol. Presumably something in the
protocol limits the data size to one byte, and would need to be changed
to a larger size. Obvious question is why this couldn't be handled via
an X extension.
--
Several other alternatives described:
* keycode compression in xkbcomp.
* Add two more reserved modifiers (say ExtMod0, ExtMod1) to increase key
space to 0-956.
* X Keycode Extension. Client apps would need to be modified to use this.

Hi Timo,
I'm not sure that's correct. I think it's probably better to file as a
bug against X in that case. There are more than 255 keycodes that can
be generated by input.h so no mapping could be possible. I think it
should be done by either the evdev driver or HAL.

Keyboards can use keycodes that go above 255. See
http://lxr.linux.no/linux+v2.6.28/include/linux/input.h
These are often multimedia keys for keyboards and remotes.
It looks like X will not regard mappings above 255 and therefore a
better way to solve this is with HAL keymaps. Not having much luck here
though. I set a map for the keycode and the scancode,
r...@gimble:/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop# lshal | grep keymap

X can't handle keycodes above 255, so evdev is right. The mappings
should be done in the kernel AIUI.
