The resolutions changed because your monitor was not being detected
properly on hardy, so you got a set of generic default resolutions.
That issue got fixed in intrepid. Jaunty improves a bit
It seems that I was wrong. I found a document on the dell support site
where all preset display modes of my external display are listed [1].
But I know that the externel monitor is also able to display other
resolutions e.g. 1440x900 (Intrepid offers this resolution). The real

- /etc/X11/xorg.conf if you made any changes there
- the output of `sudo get-edid | parse-edid` (you will need the read-edid
package for this)
