Basically this is a dupe of #283986; see https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17215 as well. The resolutions changed because your monitor was not being detected properly on hardy, so you got a set of generic default resolutions. That issue got fixed in intrepid. Jaunty improves a bit

It seems that I was wrong. I found a document on the dell support site where all preset display modes of my external display are listed [1]. But I know that the externel monitor is also able to display other resolutions e.g. 1440x900 (Intrepid offers this resolution). The real problem for me is

Thank you for reporting this bug. Could you please upload the following as separate attachments: - /var/log/Xorg.0.log - the output of `lspci -vvnn` - /etc/X11/xorg.conf if you made any changes there - the output of `sudo get-edid | parse-edid` (you will need the read-edid package for this)
