The problem is what I tripped on and in the log above: ERROR: Extended record needed (3696 1024), not yet supported! Feb 23 15:10:30 ubuntu ntfsresize: Please try to free less space. I bet this bug is a duplicate. I guess this is a bug in ntfstools? -- jaunty install resize partition fails

I have also just seen this happen on my system using Jaunty Alpha 4 Live CD. I tried to resize an NTFS system (Windows 7 beta) and it just sat there for 10 minutes or so. Finally a message came up saying it could not write the changes to the disk. I rebooted the Live CD and attempted it again

possibly bad install cd or bad HD: The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk: [Errno 5] Input/output error This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD
