Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.4.02
system -- preferences -- screen resolution
choose a new resolution, click apply.
[If the resolution is not supported, you see nothing. What key to press?
Usually, anything is undone with Esc]
Press Esc.
The new resolution is kept.
If you could not see anything, things will not get better.

One more misfeature: after you press the laptop power key and reboot,
this broken mode gets restored on the logon screen (after "switch user").

Have seen this on 8.4.02 ia64 on Compaq 6715b, resolution 1680x1050
(supported), but with rotation=left (unreadable screen).

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
