The problem lies with the mplayer package, it should'nt ship with an
old/buggy/unmaintained gui at all.

I'd rather see the gmplayer binary not being shipped with mplayer and
mplayer-nogui (which is an Ubuntu package only) disappear (or at the
limit being replaced by a gmplayer package). AFAIK gmplayer is rather
buggy and not properly maintained anymore (it should really disappear
from the source
Sorry but I do not understand you.
Gnome-MPlayer is a mplayer fronted that not need another fronted as
gmplayer.
Currently Gnome-MPlayer installs first gmplayer (mplayer package) before
only mplayer binary (mplayer-nogui).
Then... why?
