I think USB sound cards always should be plugged in directly in the
computer especially if it's a USB speaker. It gets more electricity from
the machine if directly connected. Most USB hubs are bad quality too and
best if you don't use them at all especially with complicated hardware.

I have had this same problem since fiesty (when I started using ubuntu).
I have a 2.0 powered usb hub and a plantronics dsp-500 headsets. I have
tried it with a 1.1 usb hub and it does work fine. Not really knowing
