I had the same problem in 9.04 x86.
I solved it by removing the '-k' option from modprobe in /etc/init.d/lirc since
the manpage of modprobe knows of no 'k' option this script always fails to
load/verify the modules.

i have the same message with module lirc_dev and lirc_serial.
manualy load and start of lirc will work fine.
lirc in ubuntu 8.10 works fine on same machine.
