Does sound work in other applications, e.g. Ekiga?

Sounds similar to my problem with Cheese. When I
try to record something, the sound is so low I have to turn everything up to
hear it at all. I'm sure if there were options for the sound input and/or
recording input, we could simply adjust the volume level.
I'm running An Acer Aspire One ZG5
