This isn't really Ubuntu's fault, since it's the driver itself that
controls the light on the mute button/touch-switch. Theoretically, it is
the original sound driver creator's fault for not making a proper driver
for Linux users to use, and resorting to having the default audio
drivers on Ubuntu

Here's more precise information: on my laptop (Pavilion tx1219us), to get
working sound recording, I use:
options snd_hda_intel model=6stack-digout
In this mode, the mute light stays red regardless of mute state.
If I use options snd_hda_intel model=hp or the default choice, the mute
light
Similar problem with HP Pavilion tx1219. The mute light stays orange
(muted) regardless of whether the sound is truly muted. The mute key
does work when pressed.
The problem is only that the current state of muting/unmuting does not
get propagated to the leds. I'm unsure to what these leds are
