I encounter the same problem on Ubuntu 9.04, with the FTP server of a Freebox
(an ISP ADSL box).
The FTP server is not accessible via Nautilus, because it stops on the same
error message :

Ubuntu. Has of now, it is still not working.

Workaround is available in upstream git repository (master and stable
branch), but PLEASE also file a bug against ProFTPd and get the server
fixed!

Even if it is a server issue, it seems to affect a lot of them, which
makes Nautilus unable to connect to lots of FTP. Also, the server issue
was already present before upgrade but connection was possible.
This error should not stop the connexion process. This behaviour should
be changed in gvfs I
the issue seems to be a server one, it lists UTF8 as a feature but
doesn't understand the option

can you connect those server using an another client? could you
"GVFS_DEBUG=1 /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd -r" on a command line, try to connect
in nautilus and copy the log there?

Oh, god. I was trying different FTP accounts but all in the same server.
I have tried another 2 different FTP accounts which are in different servers
and it works fine!
So... could it be a problem of the server? It's strange, it had never caused
problems mounting FTP directories with Nautilus...
is that specific to that ftp server?
