As far as I am concerned the problem was solved by changing the graphics
board

The problem is that Nvidia didn't update driver 71 which, as a result, doesn't
work with the xserver in Ubuntu (and this is why we removed it from our
repositories). There is nothing we can do about it because the driver is
proprietary.

The Nvidia Legacy graphics drivers are not even in the Karmic
repositories. I had to go back to the jaunty repository to get the
drivers for all Nvidia legacy cards. For example TNT and Vanta cards
the use the nvida 71.xxx driver and kernel patch. Because some of us
use old hardware it is
