I upgraded to 9.04 from 8.10 on 30/05/09; I waited until then, as I had
the idea that any bugs would have been fixed...
I followed the steps as mentioned by LeeWells, but I had the same result
as kit. So I uninstalled pulseaudio, Myth seems OK now.
I experienced the problem of the frontend
removing those unstripped libraries was a temporary fix. issue started
occuring again without even rebooting machine. removing pulseaudio
appears to be a permanent solution for me so far.

uninstalling the unstripped versions of those libraries, installing the
standard ones and rebooting the computer worked for me. (i believe
365638 could be the same bug as this.)
maybe vlc dependencies need to be adjusted so it depends on libraries
that work and conflicts with the unstripped
Reproduces without the nvidia binary drivers too.

reinstalled pulseaudio, problem returned.
installed libavutil49 libavcodec52 (as suggested by Apport retracing
service), and the problem went away.
My machine had -unstripped- versions of those libraries installed. But even
after
re-installing the -unstripped- versions, then problem won't
