Same issue here.
Ubuntu 8.04.3 no problem.
9.04 freezes right after login, with no option to configure or update anything.

Same deal here.

Few seconds after logging in, system locks up.
Tried creating a virtual machine, install the OS again (BTW 64-Bits),
update, then remastersys to burn an image already updated.
Had no chance to update. The system barely shows the Update
Are you running the nvidia closed source driver?

I had no problem with a standard Jaunty 32bit install. When I installed
