Unfortunately, this bug is still alive in Karmic. I am using the
mainstream kde 4.3.2 in Karmic and there is no chance to modified the
file associations, everytime I press apply the aplication refuse to
change anything a returns to the previous order of applications.

I am having similar probem.
Cant change any file association from system settings in jaunty.
When i change the priority of file association of a filetype (mp3 which is
currently associated first with audacity and i want to change to mplayer) i can
get to move the priority, when i press apply
