This problem still exists in 12.04.
When the extra dialogue appears after starting installing the updates,
software updater goes to front but doesn't take focus. To go back to
their work (say, on Firefox), the user has to (1) click on the software
updater window to make it take the focus, and
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

Is this a deliberate change? I recently installed Karmic, previously
having had Intrepid installed. In Intrepid, when updates became
available an icon appeared in the notification area next to the network
and sound icons. I could click on it and install the updates when I
wanted to. Now I see the
