After further testing I reinstalled the following version that worked

I had a fully functional Ubuntu 8.04.1 installation on my PowerMac G5 4x2,5
GHz with a Nvidia Quadro FX 4500 (driver nv).
I upgraded to the 8.10 and 9.04 version with the update manager. When the
