i've edited /etc/usplash.conf and added a couple of lines to try to set
the resolution, but this didn't help.

also, i forgot to mention that once gdm has loaded, all animated cursors
flicker... should i report this as a separate bug?

It look like your xorg.conf has a lot of garbage in it, which could be
the issue. Could you attach it as well?
