The artifacts don't show up with nvidia driver version 185 (stable) as
well.

It seems that this problem doesn't happen any more with the latest (190)
drivers. I am using it for a day and screen updates work fine so far.

It seems that this has something to do with Compiz: desktop cube. This
thread suggests a workaround to use Compiz settings manager/ CCSM-cube-
transparent cube and set transparent when not rotating

Thanks for looking into this.
I cannot reproduce the bug when compiz is disabled. I could not test
with the nv driver as apparently xgl support is missing then.
I also forgot to mention, that the behavour does not occur always,
sometimes the GUI reacts fine, but some actions especially
