Thank you SO much Kevin. Your solution ( atkbd.reset kernel parameter)
worked perfectly for our laptop as well. Ubuntu, can you please now do
something about this issue so that Ubuntu works out of the box on
these machines?

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

The same problem in my Sony Vaio VGN-CS320J and
uname -r
2.6.28-14-generic
After having the keyboard dead, I could make it work again doing a
suspend to disk/resume from disk.
