Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.
I haven't been able to reproduce your issue by disabling apparmor.
According to the apt log files:
Setting up mysql-server-5.0 (5.1.30really5.0.75-0ubuntu10.2) ...
* Stopping MySQL database server mysqld

Umm, I'm really trying to help here. Note that my patience is running thin, and
I don't appreciate the patronizing tone.
Here is what I've done to disable AppArmor on my system:
sudo invoke-rc.d apparmor stop
sudo update-rc.d -f apparmor remove

Yes, the profiles are untouched since the system was installed. I never used
apparmor. The profiles certainly do not match what's on the machine, which can
cause problems *if and only if* apparmor should start. Yes, the mysql files are
in a location not configured not permitted by apparmor.
Thanks for helping to improve Ubuntu. At this point I think we're
mainly aiming for a more complete bug report. Any work to fix this
would come after that, once we have a clear, complete and reproducible
bug report to work with.

The mysql apparmor profiles work fine for me here (Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04).
Please describe what you mean by the profiles being bogus in
considerably more depth. Please be constructive -- suggest imrpovements
to them if you feel they are needed.
If you have chosen to manually move MySQL database
