Public bug reported: Binary package hint: efax-gtk
Hi, I tried to use Efax-gtk but it freezes the whole computer, when clicking the standby button. - Hardware: Laptop, HP AMD ZM80, TurionX2 Ultra, 2Gb / 160Gb. - Software: Ubuntu 9.04. ScanModem tells that: The HDA card softmodem chip is: 0x11c11040 (I attach the file with the ScanModem data). I then've installed: dkms-agrsm_2.1.80-6_i386.deb and agrsm- tools_0.0.1_all.deb, as per suggested for this Agere modem chip in: http://www.picharras.net/noticias/linux/instalar-modem-agere-system-en- kubuntu-9.04.htmlwhich The output of agrsm-test shows that it is detected the following winmodem: QUOTE: $ sudo agrsm-test [sudo] password for vic579: Found drivers for boot kernel 2.6.28-11-generic at: /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/updates/dkms/agrserial.ko /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/updates/dkms/agrmodem.ko Loading drivers: Drivers loaded: agrserial 19808 0 agrmodem 1258372 1 snd 62628 20 agrmodem,snd_atiixp_modem,snd_via82xx_modem,snd_intel8x0m,snd_ac97_codec,snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_seq_oss,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device and symbolic link created: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 2009-06-15 13:11 /dev/ttySAGR -> /dev/ttyAGS3 Checking for utility wvdialconf Found /usr/bin/wvdialconf, preparing to run: wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf A file /etc/wvdial.conf already exists, first renaming to /etc/wvdial.200906151106 ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 2400 baud, next try: 9600 baud ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 9600 baud, next try: 115200 baud ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- and failed too at 115200, giving up. I have to restart the laptop (well, to disconnect the power wire and to connect it again, as it has not restart button). In the modemdata.txt it is shown that: "Currently, the dkms-agrsm code is NOT competent for 2.26.28 and later kernels." So being quite common the hardware included in the HP laptops (and perhaps other brands of laptops), this means that many (most?) laptops cannot use its fax capabilities with Ubuntu, but have to go back to Windows to send/receive faxes. I would thank you if there is some workaround for this problem.
