it has something to do with a corporate firewall because if I proxy it
through a machine outside of my corporate firewall, it works fine. The

users (as myself), if you add http://ppa.launchpad.net/pidgin-
developers/ppa/ubuntu hardy main to your list of repositories under

version. I also want to see this bug stay open until the issue is

play, however from what I understand the authentication method will now
be more secure

If you are not running 9.04 (I am running 8.10) and you would like the
latest version of Pidgin to appear through Synaptic, you will find the
necessary PPA instructions (including the key) here:
http://pidgin.im/download/ubuntu/

Now that's the solution for Ubuntu 9.04!
Do what JamesIsIn suggested. Follow the instructions at:

This worked for me, and I like it better than other solutions mentioned.

You can get the latest versions at get deb.com It has versions for 8.10
up. It may not update for you. You may have to go back to get deb for
that. They are working on a repository but don't think its fully
functional yet.

added pidgin repository the upgrade now works fine

This seems like a simple problem to fix. I do not wish to take our
volunteer developers for granted, but I don't understand why this
problem has not been fixed yet in the form of an Ubuntu Update that
prompts me. Isn't it as simple as repairing one line of code, and
recompiling?

Why not just do the upgrade listed on the Update Manager to
9.04...?...more better you will see...
