I had the same error in installing the nvidia drivers in ubuntu 10.04LTS
Desktop x86.
After I had installed the ubuntu restricted extras (go to terminal, type sudo
apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras),
I could successfully download and install the drivers. Hope this helps.
