Binary package hint: fish

I changed my shell to fish, as shown here:

    kkin...@kkinder-laptop ~> grep fish /etc/passwd
    kkinder:x:1000:1000:Ken,,,:/home/kkinder:/usr/bin/fish

X11/gdm works fine and I can start terminals fine as well. However when
I attempt to login via a console (by pressing ctrl+alt+f1, for example),
fish will not fully start. I will get this message:

    Welcome to fish, the friendly interactive shell
    Type help for instructions on how to use fish

With no further text; no command line. I cannot ctrl+c or ctrl+d my way
out of the console and it's effectively unusable at this point.
