Actually, it seems to have resolved itself within the last week. I waited a few mornings to be sure, but I've had a least 4 days in a row now without XOrg hogging a core in the morning. No change to kernel (I've stayed on 2.6.30-9) or video driver. There were updates to both XOrg, and the
