This took me a while (real world got in the way) but I built varkon with
and without the /bin/sh /bin/bash fix and both installed, removed and
purged with no problems. I pulled the source from debian and installed
varkon on a fresh karmic VB install, varkon installed, launched (I made
a few stick
nhandler,
I checked the above mentioned patch, and it does not include a fix for
the /bin/sh /bin/bash problem in varkon.sh. However there is a
discussion going on in debian-devel about transitioning to dash. I am a
bit behind in reading my debian-devel ml emails but catching up. IMHO I
think

Charlie, I am seeing a change that says, Apply patch for bashism in
debian/varkon.sh, thanks Tim Retout and Chris Lamb (Closes: #465376).
Could you please check if that change was sufficient to allow us to use
/bin/sh (and drop the Ubuntu delta)? If it was, please change this bug
to a sync
