On todays Karmic update the padlock seems to have disappeared completely both when locked and when unlocked; I'm not sure what's responsible for that. I guess this is unrelated to the original problem - but I'm not sure if this state is permenant or not. Dave -- Disk mounter: Icon for encrypted

I spent some time tracking this down a bit more. It appears that the padlock in question is generated as an emblem by gnome-disk-utility and it's the gdu_encrypted_lock.svg and gdu_encrypted_unlock.svg that I can't tell the difference between at that size. The problem stems from the fact that:

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu 9.10 install, that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be addressed as part of this project. -Encrypted partitions are used by advanced us
