I just ran into this on a fully updated Karmic system so it's not fixed
yet.

Does anyone have the detail/link/fix-version of the upstream fix to gdm?
I'd like to understand if this issue is still effecting me on Karmic
final.

The file's there on my system so I'm a little unsure why it's not on
yours. But it doesn't get sourced anymore anyway, and that's more a GDM
issue (I think)

This is apparently due to the fact that this file is missing under
Karmic:
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/55gnome-session_gnomerc
Under Jaunty, it was present, and had the following content:
