I have seen this on both Dapper and Edgy. Some KOffice apps show up (Krita, Kontact, Kivio) but not others (Kword, Kspread, Kpresenter) The KOffice icons do show up under KDE, just not under Gnome. -- Kword does not appear in menu https://launchpad.net/bugs/40501 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list

Thank you for the bug report. Let me see if I got the scenario correct: you're running Ubuntu Dapper (gnome). Then you install kword but an icon doesn't appear in the applications menu. I mention this because this bug is linked from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EdgyKnownIssues but the wording
