I also experience similar problems, although I do not use freecell or any games. Each time it happens the last message in dmesg is pid.c: Stale PID file, overwriting.. I also notice the screen flickers black every now and then as if it is about to crash, but it doesn't most of the time.

I found a workaround for the problem on my second machine: after getting the boot menu to show up, I found that booting to the prior kernel version instead of the current kernel version makes everything work fine. In other words, instead of booting the default: Ubuntu 9.10, 2.6.31-16-generic

Please disregard my post #17: the problem came back. Apparently I fooled myself with 2 random successful logins in a row. It does NOT matter which kernel version I boot with; I almost always get logged out as soon as I log in. -- logout without warning shortly after login

I just encountered the same problem on another, much older computer on which I had successfully been running Ubuntu 9.04 for about a month. I upgraded to 9.10 but now about 4 times out of 5 I can't log in. When I try, some kind of text appears very quickly (grey on a black background), but is

I suspect there may be different bugs concerning different people here. It seems to me at least Anita ought to look at Bug #465317 and Bug #444518 (possibly duplicates of each other): perhaps one of those applies more to your case. As for Don's, where hiding/showing the GRUB menu seems to have an

Thanks Jani. Using your links I found https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-games/+bug/469172 which looks exactly like my problem with the game grabbing all the memory. -- logout without warning shortly after login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/407488 You received this bug

I believe I have found a workaround for my problem, and I'm hoping that not only will this help other people work around it also, but it may help developers track down the bug. What I did was enable the grub2 bootup menu that is hidden by default. Apparently Ubuntu 9.10 uses a new bootloader

I am having a very similar problem with Ubuntu 9.10. About 2 out of 3 times when I log in, I see the graphics screen change quickly to a black text-only screen, then I see some kind of text (maybe an error message) print too quickly to read, then it pops right back to the graphical login screen.

I am seeing this brand new bug also. After 20-30 minutes of use a logout occurs. I have been using ubuntu on THIS laptop (a Dell Inspiron 1525) since 8.04 and have NOT seen this problem before. My wife has seen it a number of times while playing solitaire with wifi off and nothing else running.
