automatix has probably broken your installation, don't use non-official,
non-supported software. Closing the bug since we support Ubuntu usage
but if you run some tools like that you take your responsabilities for
it

I have used Automatix, but not to fix this problem. I fixed this by
uninstalling and reinstalling several gnome components. Unfortunately, I
don't remember which ones. I believe it may have been the
gnome-control-center which uninstalled many other things with it.

I too have this after installing dapper updates yesterday. No default
schema in configuration editor either. Password is now also rejected in
synaptic. I am at a loss to what has happened. Please help!
