My notebook (DV7-1070ED) still has this issue with Karmic Koala.

I believe this could be a higher level issue. e.g. Pulse Audio
with pavucontrol, output devices, there's a port: selection list giving
Analog Output, Analog Headphones as options.
Some new bugs are being reported with the same symptom, same pci id different
codec.

headphones
