i can confirm that installing a debian i386 gtk-qt-engine helps when
using 32 bit thunderbird. You need to use 32 bit thunderbird for using
the lightning extension.

This happens not only in KDE, but in Gnome as well. Just open the File
Open in Openoffice (which is 32-bit) on Ubuntu-amd64.
