I just updated karmic xubuntu to the with the latest updates and
rebooted. So far I have not received a crash from volumed but did
receive one from something else--bug 425222.

I am running the 8/24/09 Xubuntu daily build and I got this same message
immediately upon reaching the desktop in a Virtualbox OSE instance. I
have no idea what may have been called or invoked; all I can tell you
right now is that I use Virtualbox Open Source Edition 3.0.4 on a
Gateway 17 PA6A

Please paste the output of 'aptitude search pulse', if it shows 'i' in
front of pulseaudio, also paste 'ps aux | grep pulse'. Thanks in
advance.

Here are the outputs from both commands. I just got this version
installed so i have not used it enough to know if it crashes
systematically yet. I can tell you that my sound does not work when
using the IM application.

Things should work better for you without PulseAudio. You can completely
remove it by purging the gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio and pulseaudio packages
(with aptitude it would be : 'sudo aptitude purge gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio
pulseaudio'). I do not plan xfce4-volumed to support PulseAudio for Karmic,
