I am running the 8/24/09 Xubuntu daily build and I got this same message immediately upon reaching the desktop in a Virtualbox OSE instance. I have no idea what may have been called or invoked; all I can tell you right now is that I use Virtualbox Open Source Edition 3.0.4 on a Gateway 17 PA6A

Things should work better for you without PulseAudio. You can completely remove it by purging the gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio and pulseaudio packages (with aptitude it would be : 'sudo aptitude purge gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio pulseaudio'). I do not plan xfce4-volumed to support PulseAudio for Karmic,
