Public bug reported:

This system installs, boots, runs 9.04 with no problems.

Also doing an 'update-manager -d' updates to 9.10 and all is well.

It's just fresh installs which appear broken.

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/alpha-4/karmic-
desktop-i386.iso is the ISO file I used.

I used the same process I used with 9.04 to burn this on a CD.

9.10 system starts to boot, produces no messages, then hangs with a
black screen.

I have an additional disk in this system I can install 9.10 again and
I'm happy to work this problem through, if there's someone who can
assist me.
