I am seeing the exact same issue with an OfficeJet 6500a Plus e710n-z on
Ubuntu 12.10 using HPLIP 3.13.4
I fixed it by running system-config-printer from the CLI, deleting all
instances of the printer (looks like the HPLIP may have created duplicates) and
adding it back.
Then going into the
Same problem here with HP LaserJet 4350 (I know it's a different printer but
this is the most related post I've found and it solved my problem).
I've edited the ppd and changed:
*DefaultHPOption_Duplexer: False
into
*DefaultHPOption_Duplexer: True

I am suffering from the same problem. My Photosmart C6200 series has
duplexer installed, but it's not possible to turn it on in Installable
Options, controls are simply not accessible.
It's still possible to use duplexer in openoffice if manually select

Can someone of the HPLIP developers at HP check all PPD files whether
they contain the constraint problem described in comment #28 and fix
them? Thanks.

This affects me too, with an HP Officejet j6400, duplexer unit is
installed.
Like Gustav Svensson, duplex printing works correctly when using:
lpr -o sides=two-sided-long-edge
, but his suggested fix of editing the PPD file has not worked for me.
Running Ubuntu 12.04, hplip version 3.12.6.
If you are on Oneiric (11.10) can you try to install the HPLIP 3.11.12
package from my PPA?
https://launchpad.net/~till-kamppeter/+archive/ppa
Simply run the commands
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:till-kamppeter/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install
Thank you Till, but I am on Debian Wheezy. The problem is fixed for me
by changing the UIConstraints the ppd as mentioned above.

I managed to fix the problem by editing
/etc/cups/ppd/Officejet_Pro_8500_A910.ppd
Changing:

on line 36 to

With
lpr -o sides=two-sided-long-edge document.pdf
it works.
My guess is that it would work if only the option was available in the printing
dialog.

Thank you for your response Till. I tried different programs but it is
not possible to set two-sided in the printing dialog, so I believe that
is where the problem is. Maybe I can test with this option set from the
command line.

Hello vonebenz,
HP PSC 1510 does not support Autoduplex feature and unfortunately
'Manual duplex' feature is not supported by HPLIP till date however
windows support it.
FYI: Please see the product specifications.
Hello friends, first of all THANKS for your kind attention to my problem!
Sorry for wasting your time, but now it's evident to me that I must hope for
the Manual Duplex supported in HPLIP (or in Ubuntu). Many cheap printers does
not provide the automatic function double sided; so I suppose that
Hello, sorry but my printer (HP PSC 1510) does not work properly with
double-sided. It prints every page on a new sheet of paper, in sequence (1, 2,
3, ...) and not the odd pages first and the even pages after, as usual in
Windows.
Thanks, Enzo.
--
You received this bug notification because
vonibenz, the duplex option in HPLIP is only for printers with a real
duplex unit, not for manual duplex, which means printing odd pages
first, turning the deck of printed paper over and printing the even
pages on the back sides. AFAIK, manual duplex is not (yet) supported by
HPLIP.

Now I have installed the version 3.11.10 always on Ubuntu 10.10; this new
version of HPLIP is intended as a fix of the problem Double Sided Printing?
Are the correct settings: paper A4 Auto-duplex, Duplexer installed, Double
Sided Printing Long Edge ?
Please confirm, thank you very much.
--
That is all correct. Does it actually print double-sided for you?

NO SRIKANTH,
what you wrote is NOT true! The bug is NOT resolved yet, at least on printers
like mine!
In the meantime I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 and HPLIP 3.11.7 (the very last,
one week ago) BUT the Double Sided Printing is NOT WORKING at all, on my H.P.

Old bug, closing.
Follow the suggestion of Srikanth in Ubuntu 10.10 or higher.

Tried duplex printing with HP OfficeJet Pro 8000 on Ubuntu 10.10 with
latest HPLIP release 3.11.1. Yes Double-Sided Printing option is
grayed out under Installable Options, but setting Long Edge
(Standard) under Print Settings tab does the printing double sided.

Same for me on Ubuntu 10.10 with a HP Color Laser CP4520 an HPLIP
3.10.2.
Under Installable Options I have a Duplexer Installed (On/Off - radio

but it's grayed out.
Under Print Settings I have an option Double-Sided Printing that I can
