This issue has resurfaced for me in Lucid Lynx. The sound icon is back
in the system tray (also a keyboard layout icon both of) which I want
removed. There is no longer a gnome-volume-control-applet in
system-preferences-startup applications to remove the sound icon with.

I confirm that the workaround of disabling gnome-volume-control-applet
in startup apps works. Good enough for me.
