I have the same problem. Started after I updated, the last time I
updated was about 3 days ago, so it most likely is something recent.
The last message displayed on the console is:
* Shutting down ALSA... [OK]
* Stopping virtual private network daemon(s)...
* No VPN is running.
Checking for
Yeah, I'm not alone! This started happening about 3 days ago for me as
well. Same exact scenario it sounds like. Nothing works, have to hold
down power key.

I'm seeing this too. I will have to double check, but is it possible
that it is trying to kill init/upstart?
I believe at one point, I saw two lines starting with init: and
mentioning SIGSTOP first, then SIGCONT.
