AFAIK core updates are disabled by default in Debian/Ubuntu package. The update
mechanism works only for plugins. These plugins are installed in home directory.

yes, there is a feature inside that allows you to update azureus plugins
(azureus is having this behaviour since a lot of releases, so this is not a
*new* feature). But as Onkar said those core-updates are disabled in both
Debian / Ubuntu packaging. (anyway they install everything
Under 3.0.1.6 changelog's entry (dated 2007) I see:
# UI | Option to auto-download and install updates
So, again, this is not a new feature at all. I remember using it in past
versions of azureus (vuze) without having any problem. (e.g they were
not disabled)

disabled core azureus updates that compromise sync with the debian

I've tested the package on karmic and everything seems to work properly:
1. speed test (just fixed in this release) works fine
2. check for updates plus updates installations are doing their work
3. in general, the whole bittorrent client is having the right behaviour while
downloading /
