indicator-applet-session still uses mission-control-4, karmic is shipping mission-control-5 (part of the infrastructure empathy uses). indicator-applet-session is being ported to work with MC5 now. That will fix the session state in the applet. As for the null reference in the message applet,

Clicking on empathy in the messaging menu should raise the contact list not toggle. That was included in this morning's upload. This was a design decision made by the design team and pidgin now behaves the same way. -- not honoring the indicator green dot policy
