indicator-applet-session still uses mission-control-4, karmic is
shipping mission-control-5 (part of the infrastructure empathy uses).
indicator-applet-session is being ported to work with MC5 now. That
will fix the session state in the applet. As for the null reference in
the message applet,

Clicking on empathy in the messaging menu should raise the contact list

gwibber an entry remains in the message applet that says (null) .

I have the latest version on karmic and the indicator session applet is
completely incompatible, the status is always offline on the applet even
though empathy is online and the status menu items are grayed out.
