My problem went away after I removed a bunch of my user's stuff from
/tmp, as I was havign a whole lot of profile-related issues with opening
the xterm, firefox and update manager.
]$ rm -R /tmp/*
(other users' stuff is not touched...)

I was able to remove the files in the /tmp directory, but this did not
solve the issue. Each time, I try to update with update manager, I'm
prompted to provide a password. Then a new window pops up requesting to
either authenticate or cancel the update. These buttons are
unresponsive and ?cause?
Encountered this on 10-05 while trying to update karmic beta.
