It sounds like for whatever reason, the driver failed to build properly (perhaps bug 450493 or bug 434154 but could be anything) and jockey did not propagate the error up (bug 451305) and set nvidia up to boot. Since it failed to build, it fails to boot. Unfortunately the logs for the boot

I have a clue (perhaps). Looking in /lib/modules, there is NO file named nvidia.ko... which is present on my older, Jaunty system. Surely the nvidia 185 driver deb file should install a kernel module? Indeed, recovering all of the nvidia-185* files from /var/cache/apt/ and dpkg-deb -x 'ing

I just changed the card with an older GeForce 8500GT/PCI/SSE2 and it works much better without any nvidia drivers with 9.04 than with the FX220. Activation now appears in the Hardware Drivers (does not appear with the FX220 installed), but activation causes the system not to start properly with
