Edwards fix for Linux noobs (like me...)

Karmic 64 bit. Stock install through the ui. Tried swfdec, but it
didn't work well, so uninstalled an installed adobe's nonfree.

I can confirm Cedric's fix works. I think the problem is that the
flashplugin-installer was using an alternative plugin and that even if
you manually copy the libflashplayer.so from Adobe, it wasn't getting

+left-click to get any action.

I tried disabling compiz, using the amd64 prerelease but I still
couldn't click any flash buttons.
The only workaround so far is keeping another mouse button pressed.

wrote didn't work - had to remove the flashplugin-installer.

I'm having the same problem although in Firefox. A temporary fix is
right-clicking on the flash video then left-clicking while keping the

I can confirm on the Karmic beta (amd64) that flash player prevents me
from clicking. I tried Andrew's fix and it does not work on my machine.

Having exactly the same issue with latest karmic beta,
Used the link provided by andrew

player version.

Also here... Disabling the Flash Block Firefox plug makes no difference.
The version of Flash bundled with Karmic beta is broken. I'm going to
change the importance to Medium since FF+Flash is such a critical
component for most users and their experience of Ubuntu.

Ok, so I can't change the importance because I'm just a lowly scum bag,
but I've found some more information.
Turning Compiz off solves the problem for me. Turning Compiz back on
crashes Compiz in Karmic beta, so I can't test to see if it just needed
a nudge.
Anyway, no re-installation of Flash
I can confirm that disabling Compiz does allow one to click on objects
with in flash and everything works fine with out Compiz on, when I do
turn it back on I'm back to where I started with no interactivity with
flash.

buttons again. They won't work with it on.

I can confirm that I cannot click flash buttons in Compiz in Karmic
amd64. However, switching to Metacity from Compiz does not fix the
issue. Could I have a different version of flash than those of you that
this switch works for?

I also have this problem. ubuntu 9.10 kernel 2.6.31-11 amd64 using
Firefox 20091006041719 Minefield/3.7a1pre
tried reinstalling flash...
flash WORKS but you usually can't click anything. youtube lets me click
PLAY but other videos the clicking makes the button flash but it doesn't
actually
this may work, it worked for me:
download the 64bit plugin from here:

remove any existing flash plugins from /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ AND
~/.mozilla/plugins
extract new version via root to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

I just noticed if I disable all plugins/addons, firefox crashes on any
sites with flash...
I eliminated plugin issues, and found that it only works if you have
flashblock enabled. with flashblock disabled, I crash on hulu, youtube,
etc.
so the clicking works now but there is still some sort of
