Ok, after updating today, the issue is obviously fixed here. Compiz with Extras
and no fallbacks or other issues.
In case my positive impression was to early I'll report back. In the meantime,
thanks a lot and my respect for this speedy fix.

I've changed the theme, but crash still occurs.
I'm able to definitely reproduce this when hoovering over bookmark menus, but
only when navigation through a longer list.
Attach xsession.errors.old and mentioned there, at the end of file:

Now disabled Compiz effects Extra and switched to Normal.
No fall back to login window, no crash when triggering menus, playing flash.
