Sorry for taking so much time to post my reply, I marked the mail as
TODO but forgot about it. Since there are so many laptops with ATI card
and working hibernate functionality out there (my T42 works fine too), I
would conclude that it is an issue with this specific laptop. It seems
to be broken
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for
you? Thanks in advance.

Hello!! Would you please explain why this still says NEEDINFO, and then
decide what to do about the bug? This was reported pre-6.06 and now
Edgy is about to get released. Please don't delay.

Perhaps this is related:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8178
With the i810 driver, the use of vbetool during suspend/resume causes the
display rendering to be a mess after resume. I have had to comment out vbetool
from the suspend.d ACPI scripts.
I am going to file a separate bug
Are these the same bug?
