Just performed an upgrade from 9.04 to Karmic final release, no sound
devices shown in Sound Preferences exactly as mentioned in post #7 (also
on a D830).

!!FIXED!!
The latest beta update fixed this issue, October 19, 2009. Sound is now
working for
Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)
$ speaker-test -c2 -Dplug:front

Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2
