Due to some other (bigger) issues I switched back to Ubuntu (ca. a month
ago). Since then, no problems.

I would suspect this is much more likely a kernel or Xorg bug than one
in XFCE.

Thanks for the additional information. I am marking this confirmed, it
is present in both Xubuntu 9.10 and Lucid. I have experienced keyboard
lockups in lucid, but only in the terminal and thunar. Opening a new
session of the locked application allows me to continue. Since my mouse
does not
a USB mouse in and
get some time with it until it locks up as well...then its time to reboot.
