solved:
The cracking noise was because of soundcard-standby. In /etc/modprobe.d
/alsa-base.conf I changed the line to #options snd-hda-intel
power_save=10 power_save_controller=N. I disabled soundcard-standby.

release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .
